ECZEMA

Eczema affects one in three children in Melbourne. Effective treatment requires education about the triggers and avoidance of aggravating factors including heat, prickle and dryness. Children need a thorough eczema assessment and demonstration of how to apply topical treatments correctly. Parents need education, a written management plan and prescriptions for the required treatments. Empowering parents and children is the most effective tool to manage eczema.

MOLLUSCUM

Molluscum contagiosum is a benign pox virus very commonly seen in children. Pink or skin-coloured smooth bumps appear in clusters anywhere on the body. Molluscum is a harmless virus and often resolves without treatment. For persistent or numerous lesions, treatment can enhance resolution of the virus.

VIRAL WARTS

Warts are growths that appear when a virus affects the top layer of the skin. If the warts are painful, multiply quickly or bother the child they should be treated. When over the counter preparations are not effective, other treatment options including immuno-contact therapy are available. This treatment encourages the immune system to recognise and destroy the skin cells that are infected with the wart virus. This is often the most effective and pain free treatment choice for children with lots of warts.
